Being located in Grand Rapids is wonderful and fun for many reasons, but one of our favorites is how much Grand Rapidians love art! Downtown Grand Rapids is home to the award-winning Grand Rapids Art Museum, Kendall College of Art and Design, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts. The city also boasts an impressive array of other museums, concert venues, performance halls, and schools – not to mention the incredible Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park on East Beltline. Nowhere does this local love of the creative shine more brightly than at Festival of the Arts, a Grand Rapids annual tradition for almost 50 years.
Festival of the Arts occurs every year on the first full weekend of June, calling people out into the streets of downtown to celebrate the beginning of summer, the people that make up our community, and, of course, art! Non-profit organizations set up food booths that line the closed-off streets, live music and dance performances run constantly at four different stages, and local artists sell their incredible and unique work (so make sure you don’t spend all your money on treats!) Kids and adults can get their faces painted, make block prints, paint, sculpt, and build at art stations hosted by the Festival, so you’ll never get bored.
The organizers of Festival of the Arts have published performance schedules, food booth menus, and artist lineups ahead of the event this year, which takes place on June 2, 3, and 4. Check out their website for more information. We’ll be downtown to soak up the sun, eat the food, enjoy the art, and get inspired – will you?
